Systems engineers play a fundamental role in the success of companies in many sectors.

Today, system engineering is a process that includes identifying a problem based on consumer needs and developing a solution that is constantly reassessed during execution. In summary, system engineers monitor system performance and continuously evaluate all stages of operations to ensure that a problem is resolved.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has stated that systems engineers have the ability to apply an interdisciplinary approach to ensure that technical needs are translated into step-by-step processes, in effect, producing efficient and effective results. A system engineer will often work with a project manager and the engineering team, and will take the initiative to translate between the two to facilitate the creation of a high-performance system. The system engineer will also work at each stage of the given system or process, from design and development to validation and operation, including quantitative risk assessment, often focusing on performance, testing, programming and costs. Due to the broad nature of the work, a systems engineer can work in virtually any industry, from software development and robotics to nanotechnology or civil engineering.

Due to the type of work involved, it is not surprising that those who wish to pursue a career as a systems engineer are very proficient in fields related to maths and science. In addition, many systems engineers will be in almost constant communication with the engineering teams, project managers and other project stakeholders. Ultimately, aspiring system engineers must have highly developed interpersonal skills.
